A Conservation Success Story That Inspires the World
The ceremony is more than a naming event; it is a celebration of one of the most remarkable conservation success stories in history.
The growth is the result of decades of collaboration involving government agencies, conservation organizations, researchers, veterinarians, park rangers, regional partners, and local communities.
Kwita Izina Ceremony – A Tradition Rooted in Rwandan Culture
Kwita Izina, which means “to give a name” in Kinyarwanda, is inspired by a centuries-old Rwandan tradition in which families gather to name their children eight days after birth.
Since 2005, this cultural practice extends to celebrate the newest members of Rwanda’s mountain gorilla families.
Since the first official Kwita Izina in 2005, 397 mountain gorillas have been named, these are the numbers published by Rwanda Development Board(RDB) with each name carefully chosen to reflect the baby’s story, the circumstances surrounding its birth, and the hopes of those who protect these magnificent creatures.
Beyond the Ceremony: A Vision for Sustainable Development
Kwita Izina has grown far beyond the gorilla naming ceremony itself. This year’s programme will include:
- A community project launch
- International travel media and trade familiarization trips
- A conservation exhibition
- Gorilla trekking experiences
- The naming ceremony itself

A Global Celebration
The ceremony attracts high-profile namers from across the world, including conservationists, celebrities, and community leaders.
Past editions have featured personalities from the worlds of music, film, sports, science, and royalty.
This year’s event will continue that tradition, drawing global attention to Rwanda’s conservation success and its vision for a sustainable future.
Kwita Izina Ceremony: A Future of Hope
As Rwanda prepares to welcome the newest members of its gorilla families. The 21st Kwita Izina promises to be a celebration of life, hope, and the power of community-centered conservation.
With the mountain gorilla population continuing to grow and communities benefiting directly from conservation efforts.
