City officials say the new technology will improve sanitation and support the existing workforce that keeps Kigali clean.
Emma-Claudine Ntirenganya, Director General of Communication and Education at the City of Kigali, explained that the vehicle uses advanced brushes and built-in sweeping systems. These systems clean tarmacked roads faster and more efficiently.
This initiative is part of Kigali’s larger strategy to promote environmental sustainability while maintaining its global reputation as a model city in Africa.
Kigali Introduces Advanced Road Cleaning Technology
Emma-Claudine Ntirenganya highlighted that the new road-cleaning machine uses an advanced system to reduce dust pollution. Instead of scattering particles into the air, it lifts dirt, debris, and loose materials directly from the road with powerful vacuum-suction technology.
The vehicle features a built-in waste collection tank. All collected materials are safely stored and then transported to designated disposal sites. This ensures the cleaning process is efficient and environmentally responsible.
Kigali’s Reputation for Cleanliness and Innovation
The introduction of this modern technology reflects Kigali’s long-standing reputation for cleanliness and innovation. Over the years, the Rwandan capital has earned recognition as one of Africa’s cleanest and best-managed cities. Regional and international rankings consistently praise the city.
In 2023, Kigali was named Africa’s premier smart city in the African Smart City Index. By July 2024, it ranked third among travellers’ favourite African cities, demonstrating its growing appeal for business and leisure.
“From urban planning to quality of life and business appeal, Kigali continues to set the bar high,” said Emma-Claudine Ntirenganya, the City of Kigali’s Director General of Communication and Education.
Years of Consistent Policies and Community Engagement
Kigali’s success is not accidental. Years of consistent environmental policies and community-driven initiatives have built its reputation. Forbes named Kigali the cleanest city in Africa in 2007. In 2008, it received the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award. In 2018, the UN Environment Programme hailed Kigali as “the cleanest city on the planet.”
Much of this achievement comes from forward-looking policies, such as the 2008 ban on plastic bags. Strong community involvement also plays a role. Umuganda, the nationwide monthly clean-up day, brings residents together to maintain public spaces and fosters a shared sense of responsibility for the city’s environment.
