John Blaq, thank you for talking to Global Vibe News:

JOHN BLAQ:

Hey y’all! What’s up my beautiful people from Rwanda. It’s your boy John Black, the African boy Yeah, I’m proud of myself.

Global Vibe News:

What have you been proud of throughout your career in music and what experience can you share with us?

JOHN BLAQ:

When I look at the other John Black of 20 of 6 years ago and this John Black, God has really done a very amazing job for me and I thank God for that. I’m proud of myself and I’m really proud of myself. I’m proud of the work I’m doing. Like yeah, the way I used to write those days has really improved. The way I used to sing has really improved. I’m seeing improvement in my life, I’m seeing development, I’m seeing elevation.

Global Vibe News:

What challenges have you faced in this world of fame that fans might not know about and what strategies have you taken to deal with them?

JOHN BLAQ:

There are quite so many challenges. People think we are rich. The family or like, you know, friends, every time they see you on TV, they think that you have money. And every, I think every day I receive not more than, not less than15 calls from different people asking for money, asking for help. And when you don’t jump in to help them, they think you’re just ignoring them.

They think you don’t want to help. But sometimes man, we also have struggles, you know, but sometimes people don’t understand. For them, they think every time you can solve their problems. Yeah, sometimes you just have, you know, to keep on doing what you’re doing because you won’t please everyone. Yeah, you won’t please everyone. So for, you know, inside, when you feel like you can help, you help. If you feel like you can’t, don’t force it. So that’s, that’s what I do. I help where I can and where I can’t because I also have responsibilities as a man.

Global Vibe News:

You’re known for being incredibly humble. How do you stay grounded while achieving so much fame?

JOHN BLAQ:

Yes. Yeah. I’m a humble guy.I thank God for that. You know, I’m a believer. I believe in God and God doesn’t want proud people. Even Jesus himself was a humble man. So I don’t see why, why, you know, why I show off, why I show pride when even my Lord Jesus Christ wasn’t a proud person. He was welcoming everyone.

He was preaching the gospel. So I, I promised my Lord that if he gives me blessings and that if he blesses my career and I make it to the top, I promised him to preach the gospel through my music, through the way I do my stuff. Because so many artists, when they get up there, they think they are gods. So I promised my God that I always preach his word. How? Through the way I talk to people, through the way I carry myself. God doesn’t want proud people.

That’s why I’m doing my thing in a very simple way. And I’m not finding any problem because I know at the end of the day, my Lord is there for me and is always protecting me.

Global Vibe News:

What’s one moment in your journey that felt like a dream come true?

JOHN BLAQ:

The day I performed for the crowd and they went and the whole crowd went out of place. That day, I felt like my dream had come true. And for real, it came true. It came true because when I was entering the venue, no one was, you know, no one was looking at me. No one recognized me. So I performed my first song, Romantic.

People were just looking at me. Even the MC didn’t, didn’t know me. But the moment I performed Sweet Love with Vinka, everyone was like, so are you serious? Is this the guy? Is this the guy? It was still in audio, but you know, the mileage it had. So when I performed that song like this, everyone was crazy. The whole crowd went crazy. I felt so blessed.

I felt so excited that I couldn’t even perform. I was just, I was overwhelmed. I was just shouting. I’m like, Jesus Christ, see where we are. And then after performing, I had to go, you know, and jump on my boda boda (Motorcycle taxi). And I went away because, you know, I’d just started. But that day really changed my life and changed the way I saw things. It showed me that things had started working out. Yes.

Global Vibe News:

How do you handle criticism and challenges on your path to success especially on social media?

JOHN BLAQ:

How I handle criticism is very simple. I don’t look for bad energy because there might be few people, you know, turning their bad energy onto you. And those people will make you forget about the good people who are giving you positive energy. So what I do, I focus, I go where I’m loved. I focus where I’m loved. If I detect bad energy somewhere, I leave immediately because I don’t want those people to kill my vibe.

Social media, if I’m realizing that people that this site, people are so abusive and the comments are not that good, I don’t respond to them. I just close, I just close that, you know, that page. And, you know, I go where people love me.

I don’t pay attention to that stuff. That’s why some, there are some pages where I don’t, I stopped paying much attention to, like Facebook, because so many people used to abuse on Facebook this and that. So I’m like, no, I’m going to chill. I’m going to chill. And I don’t let it control me that if I’m not on social media, am I going to live and stuff? No, I still live. I still push my music and people love it.

So what you have to do, don’t look for bad energy. If you detect some bad energy somewhere, leave it and go where they love you. Because these people will make you forget about the people who love you. The people who hate you will make you forget about the people who show you love. And at the end of the day, love matters. So you go where you are loved. Don’t force people to love you.  Yes, my brother.

Global Vibe News:

If you had to choose top five Ugandan artists to represent Uganda on the Grammy stage, who would you pick and why?

JOHN BLAQ:

Trust me, in Uganda, there are so many talented artists. I will not pick anyone because I don’t want to create division among, you know, artists. But there are so many talented artists. All we have to do is that we have to focus, you know, we have to work together and we have to change the sound because that one problem in Uganda right now, our sound has just been normal.

We need, you know, we need to go an extra mile to make sure that at least we create a difference in our sound and then we push it together and then we work together and we invest in it. And, you know, even investors should come and work with us. But trust me, there are so many different, so many good artists in Uganda who can go on the Grammy stage and still win it. Trust me.

Global Vibe News:

Who in the Ugandan music industry do you think has the potential to become an international Icon, and what sets him/her apart?

JOHN BLAQ:

Yes, I myself, I believe in myself and I know I have potential. I really have potential to make it to the international market. Why? Because of my sound, my voice. At first, I didn’t know that my voice was unique, but whoever was listening to my voice was like, oh man, your voice sounds dope. Your voice is international.

So I believe in myself. I believe I can make it to the international market. I can make it to the, you know, to the whole world when they know my music.

If I, you know, if I work on, you know, pushing the sound outside and getting investors to help us push this because I myself alone, I can do it. Yes, my brother. Yeah.

Global Vibe News:

If you had the chance to meet H.E President Museveni, The President of The Republic of Uganda, what would you tell him about the biggest challenges Ugandan artists face and what solutions would you recommend?

JOHN BLAQ:

If I get a chance to meet The President of Uganda, I would, I would, I would request him… I would ask him to, you know, to enforce the copyright law in Uganda because we are working, we artists, we are really doing a very good job. We are hardworking.

We invest in our craft, but we are not, we are not getting the money we’re supposed to get. So much money is being, is being lost. So much money is being left out and we don’t have trackers to help us track this.

You find an artist having like eight, eight hits, but they are still struggling. They can’t even pay rent. So if, if I get it, if I get a chance to meet him, I’ll ask him to enforce the copyright law and reduce some taxes of some things.

Cause even these, our friends, they need to live a good life for us also to live a good life. Because if things are being expensive everywhere and taxes are being high on everything still to come back to us at the end of the day, because there’ll be like, we can’t, we can’t afford the tickets for you guys. So yeah, I would request him to help, to help us with that.

Global Vibe News:

What is your last message to your fans?

JOHN BLAQ:

My last message to my fans. I want to thank them for loving me most, especially my fans from Rwanda haven’t been there. Every time I’m in Rwanda, I’m just in transit at the airport, but I really appreciate their love and support.

They have really loved me since 2018.  I’ve been jamming to my jams, to my songs. I love them and I request them to keep the love flowing. I love you so much, my love, my, my number one fans from Rwanda. And I thank you, my brother, for hosting me. Yeah, at least I can communicate to my friends. Thank you so much, my brother. And thanks to my fans in Rwanda.
