Journalist: From your journey in showbiz, starting at Radio Salus to now being based in the USA, 18 + years of experience, what valuable insights have you gained about the world of fame that you think readers should know?
Ally Soudy: “18+ years of experience has taught me to stay true to yourself and your values, especially when you want to bring a change or revolution in the industry, building meaningful relationships, means connections within the industry, continuous learning (Stay updated on industry trends and best practices, acquire new skills and knowledge to enhance your career and survive competition) and also overcome challenges and reviews. This can be linked to current issues in Rwandan showbiz when you see what is happening on social media, mainly on YouTube. Never forget about personal branding. In today’s world, establishing a strong online presence is key. Professionally, I can add things like: understanding your audience and adapting to changing tastes, diversifying your talents, exploring various media platforms/sources, managing your time and always staying grounded despite fame and success.”
Journalist: You’re deeply passionate about the Rwandan showbiz industry, often working tirelessly to elevate it. After years of late nights seeking interviews and pushing the industry forward, when do you think you’ll feel, it has finally reached your vision/dream?
Ally Soudy: “My dream for Rwandan showbiz is always to see it compete at the regional level and why not at the global level. Highlight our unique culture through arts and talent. Continue to see Rwandan artists on global projects, high quality productions, precise government policy in building a necessary and real Rwandan showbiz system, see Rwandan showbiz contributing significantly to Rwanda’s GDP and also benefit from greater and respectful support from our industry supporters (Fans, government, sponsors, entrepreneurs, etc.) Progress is being made, but there is still work to be done.”
Journalist: Back when you and your colleagues began in Rwandan showbiz, there may not have been much in terms of equipment even financially but the passion and love was strong. Now, while resources have grown, do you feel that the original love in Rwandan Showbiz has faded?
Ally Soudy: “I wouldn’t say it was faded; I think it’s a different generation and era. In the past, passion and love led us. We had to create things from scratch. There was no showbiz, so there was no industry. I myself have launched many projects and shaped the line which has contributed to improving Rwandan showbiz and also inspiring my fellow journalists until now. We were very creative and worked together on anything that could improve or elevate Rwandan showbiz. Today, increased resources and investments have been brought in. You can see better production quality, a wider audience (from many professional media and social networks) and more opportunities in all aspects. However, this change has also introduced: commercial pressures, competition for fame and fortune, and a shift from an artistic to a business-oriented mentality, which sometimes results in a lack of professionalism. On top of all this, I believe that new generations have brought new passion and new energy. My colleagues and I continue to mentor and inspire. Rwandan showbiz just needs to balance artistic passion and sustainability.”
