Thank you, Chantal, for talking to Global Vibe News…Can you start by telling us a little about yourself, who is Chantal Rutayisire?

Chantal RUTAYISIRE:

My Name is Chantal Rutayisire, I was born in the southern Rwanda. I moved to Kigali end of 1994 after my family was killed during 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Where are you currently based?

Chantal RUTAYISIRE:

I am currently based in the United States of America/ Texas since 2019.

Global Vibe News:

How would you describe your cultural background and its impact on your life today?

Chantal RUTAYISIRE:

I would probably talk about raising my children in a foreign country. I assure that my kids maintain Kinyarwanda; because I know it can easily be lost if it is not used. I would also say that I raise my kids the same way I was brought up with a strong sense of cultural values, Rwandan values and discipline, Like respecting elders, patriotism and the Rwandan culture in general.

What inspired you to write A Smile After Tears, and what does the title mean to you?

Chantal RUTAYISIRE:

To write my book A Smile After Tears, I would say that I was inspired by time, after so many years of pain and struggle that caused by the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, I thought my story could uplift someone who might have lost hope. The title of my book means that I overcame.

How has living in the U.S. shaped your perspective on life and your work as an author?

Chantal RUTAYISIRE:

Living in USA is one of the best decisions I have ever made, few years that I have been in this country, I have learned that hard work and sleepless nights pays. As an author it is an honor to have my story in the Holocaust Museums in Texas and be able to share my story to the world.

Is there a specific message you hope readers take away from your book?

Chantal RUTAYISIRE:

My story is not just my story, it is a story that I share with so many Rwandan women and girls, it is Rwanda’s story. I hope the readers will understand the power of resilience, healing, forgiveness and self-belief.

What does it mean to you to be a Rwandan author writing for a global audience?

Chantal RUTAYISIRE:

It is my pride to be a Rwandan author in this immense country.

What was the biggest challenge you faced in writing “A Smile After Tears”?

Chantal RUTAYISIRE:

The biggest challenge, in my writing journey was to go back in my memory and dig in my wounds and experiences I never wanted to remember.

How long did it take you to write the book, and what was the writing process like?

Chantal RUTAYISIRE:

It took me approximately three years to write my book, writing process involves finances, like any other projects, a great team of editors and artists and a good graphic design.

Global Vibe News:

Do you have a favorite place or routine when it comes to writing?

Chantal RUTAYISIRE:

My favorite writing time is in the middle of the night when everything is quiet.

How did you overcome any self-doubt or obstacles during the writing journey?

Chantal RUTAYISIRE:

There is one thing that I never do, I have never doubted myself, I have always been a big dreamer and everything I ever dreamed I achieved it.

Are there any parts of the book that were particularly challenging or emotional to write?

Chantal RUTAYISIRE:

My book has a lot of chapters that are devesting to write and it has been hard for many readers to read.

Global Vibe News:

Do you write with a specific audience in mind, or do you write for yourself?

Chantal RUTAYISIRE:

My target with A Smile After Tears is for the world to know what happened to Rwanda and its people when the world closed eyes.

Global Vibe News:

Is there a particular author or public figure who inspires your work?

Chantal RUTAYISIRE:

I was inspired by A British writer Rudyard Kipling with his famous quote “A story can be forgotten if it is not written”.

How do you hope to inspire others with your story?

Chantal RUTAYISIRE:

I hope my story will help other 1994 genocide survivors to write their stories, writing our stories is a journey of healing.

Global Vibe News:

Do you feel that your book speaks to universal themes, or is it more of a personal journey?

Chantal RUTAYISIRE:

When I was writing my book, the target was more universal than being personal.

Global Vibe News:

How have your family, friends, and community reacted to your work?

Chantal RUTAYISIRE:

My family and friends are my number one cheerleader; I have seen Rwandan community appreciation and support which I believe that they are proud of me as a Rwandan Author.

Global Vibe News:

How did you choose the title, and what does it mean on a personal level?

Chantal RUTAYISIRE:

The tittle is related to my story of life, coming from being an orphan at age of 13, going through hardships, accomplishing my education in International Relations, owning few businesses for decades, being a mother and rebuilding my own family, and now an author, in brief I am no longer a victim but victorious.

How do you approach writing about emotional or sensitive topics?

Chantal RUTAYISIRE:

Well, writing on emotional topics is a challenge, but letting your emotions out is a way of healing. There are times I felt like giving up, but when I remembered that this book is for the world not for me, then I got up and start writing again.

Global Vibe News:

Have you received feedback from readers, and if so, what’s been the most impactful?

Chantal RUTAYISIRE:

I always receive feedback on my website https://www.asmileaftertears.com/ when someone finishes reading my memoir, I cannot be thankful enough to the readers, most people are in awe when they read my story, they try to put together the little girl in the book who suffered with the woman I am today, and then they ask how this can be possible!!!

What are your future goals as an author, do you plan to write more books?

Chantal RUTAYISIRE:

By God’s grace I will be able to write inspiring books, probably a kid’s version of my story or probably a movie out of my story, now I am focusing on sharing my story with the world.

Do you have plans to tour or promote your book internationally, especially in Rwanda?

Chantal RUTAYISIRE:

Correct, soon I will start a tour to promote “A Smile After Tears” internationally and organize a book launch in Rwanda where it all began.

How do you hope to see A Smile After Tears impact readers around the world?

Chantal RUTAYISIRE:

I hope A Smile After Tears will be one of the genocide stories that will empower Leaders to eradicate any genocide ideology in their countries so that no children will go through what I went through at a young age.

Are you working on any new projects or stories currently?

Chantal RUTAYISIRE:

Yes, I have few projects I am working on that I will share with Rwandans when time allows.

Do you have any advice for aspiring authors who might be inspired by your journey?

Chantal RUTAYISIRE:

The advice to authors is to keep doing what they are doing, the world is proud to have them.
