The Invisible Struggle: SIBOMANA Emmanuel Calls for Recognition of Theatre Actors in Award Ceremonies

Must read

SIBOMANA Emmanuel, a talented actor best known for his role as Patrick in the popular Rwandan drama Urunana, is raising a powerful voice in the entertainment industry. His concern? The glaring lack of recognition for theatre actors and actresses in award ceremonies, despite their significant contributions to both the cultural and social fabric of society.

For years, the spotlight has predominantly been on film and television stars when it comes to awards, with theatre actors often overlooked. Emmanuel believes this is an injustice that needs to change. “Theatre is not just entertainment—it is an educational tool, a powerful medium that communicates complex ideas, inspires change, and fosters a deep connection between the audience and the message,” he states passionately. Yet, despite its value, theatre actors rarely receive the same level of recognition as their film counterparts.

While film and TV industries across the globe celebrate their stars with numerous accolades, theatre actors in many regions are often left out of the conversation. In countries such as the USA, Nigeria, and the UK, both film and theatre performances are equally acknowledged at major award ceremonies. In Hollywood, the Tony Awards celebrate the best in theatre, while the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) recognizes performances in both film and stage.

In Africa, however, the disparity is even more pronounced. Theatre actors in countries like Rwanda, where the industry boasts a number of internationally recognized stars, are not typically included in prestigious awards ceremonies. “We have people in the theatre industry who have made significant contributions, but when awards season comes around, they are often left out,” Emmanuel explains, stressing that this is not only a personal frustration but a collective one within the theatre community.

The Global Comparison

The difference in treatment between film and theatre actors is not unique to Rwanda. In Nigeria, one of Africa’s leading film industries, actors such as Nkem Owoh and Joke Silva have achieved notable recognition in both theatre and film. They, like their colleagues in the West, have been nominated and awarded for their contributions across both mediums. Similarly, in the USA, theatre actors like Audra McDonald, who holds a record six Tony Awards, are celebrated alongside their film counterparts.

This kind of recognition is crucial for the continued growth and professional acknowledgment of theatre as an essential art form. Theatre actors face unique challenges—working on live performances, often with little room for error, and delivering emotionally charged performances night after night. Their craft deserves the same level of respect and recognition that is given to their counterparts in film and television.

The Impact of Theatre on Society

Emmanuel argues that theatre plays a critical role in shaping society. “It is a space for dialogue, a platform where family issues, relationship dynamics, divorce, and the social lives of individuals in society are discussed and explored. Theatre actors are not just performers, they are educators and storytellers who use their craft to shed light on the complexities of personal and societal relationships. They deliver powerful messages about reproductive health, the fight against HIV/AIDS, the importance of education, combating domestic violence, choosing the right life partner, and addressing issues like infidelity. Through their performances, they inspire awareness and encourage positive change in society.” he explains. The themes explored in theatre performances resonate deeply with audiences, often sparking reflection and, in some cases, inspiring societal change.

Moreover, the financial and personal sacrifices theatre actors make should not be overlooked. Theatre often has lower budgets than films and TV productions, yet actors pour their hearts and souls into every performance, engaging audiences in ways that films sometimes cannot. The lack of recognition for their work sends the message that their efforts are less valuable—something that needs to change.

A Call to Action

Emmanuel’s message is clear: the culture of excluding theatre actors from awards nominations needs to be reformed. Theatre professionals should be included in major awards ceremonies, and their efforts should be celebrated alongside those of film and television stars. He urges award organizers to create separate categories for theatre actors or at the very least, include them in the same pools as film nominees.

Emmanuel’s call for change is not only about personal recognition but about honoring an industry that plays a vital role in the cultural, educational, and social life of a country. “We want to see a world where theatre artists receive the same respect and recognition as anyone else in the entertainment industry,” he says.

The Need for Greater Recognition

Theatre remains an important cultural force around the world. Whether it’s highlighting crucial social issues, providing a platform for local voices, or simply offering a space for artistic expression, theatre continues to enrich communities across the globe. As Emmanuel rightly points out, theatre actors and actresses deserve the same level of recognition and respect that their film counterparts enjoy.

Inclusion of theatre performances in award ceremonies is not just about adding more categories—it’s about acknowledging the hard work, dedication, and societal value that theatre artists bring to the table. As entertainment industries across the globe continue to evolve, the inclusion of theatre actors in award nominations is an important step toward recognizing the full breadth of talent that exists within the performing arts.

Theatre actors, like SIBOMANA Emmanuel, are making vital contributions to the world of performance. It’s time for them to be celebrated and honored, not just for their art but for their role in shaping the future of global entertainment.
