NYAMATA, a rapidly developing sector in BUGESERA District, is witnessing remarkable progress under the leadership of RWABUHIHI Jean Christopher, the Executive Secretary of NYAMATA Sector. On Thursday, March 27, 2025, he officiated the marriage of 23 couples, marking a significant milestone in strengthening family values within the community. Among them, 18 couples had been living together illegally, while five were tying the knot for the first time. This initiative aligns with Rwanda’s commitment to ensuring legal and stable family structures.

A Monthly Tradition with a Special Impact
RWABUHIHI Jean Christopher emphasized that marriages in NYAMATA Sector take place every last Thursday of the month. However, what made this particular event extraordinary was the high number of couples who decided to legalize their union after receiving encouragement from NYAMATA Leadership. This support played a crucial role in inspiring many to formalize their relationships in accordance with Rwandan law.
Understanding the Challenge of Informal Cohabitation
When asked about the reasons why some couples live together without legal marriage, RWABUHIHI highlighted a lack of awareness about the law.
“The main reason is that they do not take time to read the legal framework that governs family institutions. Once they do, they immediately realize how legal marriage protects their family and secures their future,” he explained.
In NYAMATA, family conflicts often arise due to mismanagement of property and infidelity. These challenges frequently lead to separations, which can have long-term negative effects on families and children. To address this, the sector leadership encourages couples to formalize their unions, ensuring that their families are legally protected. In cases where disputes arise, the appropriate legal channels are available to resolve them.
Observing the event, it was evident that the ceremony brought immense joy to the couples, including MUNANA Eva and NSENGIMANA Peter, who looked relieved and happy to have officially legalized their union. Their expressions and gestures reflected a sense of accomplishment and security, symbolizing a new beginning for their family.

A Powerful Message to the Newlyweds
During the ceremony, RWABUHIHI Jean Christopher urged the newlyweds to uphold values of love, respect, and commitment. He drew a lesson from the biblical story of Abraham and Sarah, emphasizing the importance of faithfulness in marriage. He reminded couples that even historical events continue to shape present realities, underscoring the lasting consequences of marital decisions.
Additionally, he called on families to encourage their children to embrace legal marriage.
“Our message to parents is clear: guide your children to get married officially to protect their future. If they don’t, it will have a significant impact on them and their children,” he stated.
He also advised parents to closely monitor their children, especially during school holidays, ensuring they receive proper guidance and support to make responsible life choices.
